What can you do?

only change towels in guest rooms on request

use environmentally friendly guest soaps and shampoos

use soap refillable pump dispensers for soap and shampoo attached to bathroom walls

use energy saving bulbs wherever possible

use less light in corridors at night

have water reducing/saving devices in place wherever reasonable

use of timers with electrically operated equipment

encourage minimum use of disposable/one way ware/ use ecologically degradable material where possible

collect bottles and paper for recycling

purchase from environmentally aware suppliers

offer organic produce and menus

minimise or avoid use of portion packs on breakfast buffets

re-cycle and or re-use fat and organic kitchen waste

compost waste

have a wormery

reduce room thermostats by one degree

encourage guests and staff not to waste water

not leave TVs on standby

make lavender sprays

provide no smoking rooms and areas

Use unbleached recycled/ environmentally friendly paper

Used battery facilities for guests and office

email for regular reporting

aim to run a paper free office wherever practicable

have a full environmental management policy in place

have elected staff member/s to co-ordinate the policy

have full environmental certification

win awards/nominations for your environmental achievements

Does the hotel donate, sell or recycle furnishings no longer in use

Is leftover food donated to charities like Meals on Wheels or a soup kitchen?

Are career opportunities provided for minorities and for the disabled?

Does the hotel provide guests with a sense of local culture, heritage and traditions?

Are guests offered the opportunity to make in-kind contributions to local charities?

Read up about your destination and the local people before you go

Use local guides and accommodation where possible
