Wilderness Explorers offer nature and adventure trips in Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Venezuela, Brazil and the Caribbean. Their trips are low impact with small groups. Depending on the type of trip tourists stay at ranches and nature resorts or camp.
Wilderness Explorers work directly with local communities, especially with the Amerindian communities. Many of these communities are very remote and have little opportunity to earn cash, as they mainly lead a subsistence lifestyle. However, they do need cash to buy even simple items such as torches and school books for their children. The Wilderness tours enable them to earn cash or the goods they require in exchange for using their skills as guides, boatmen etc. Additionally the local economy benefits from the purchase of food items and handi-crafts. The company has entered into a partnership with the Macushi Indians at Surama village. According to Jan Wigsten, President of the Ecotourism Association of Sweden: “ The Surama village partnership with Wilderness Explorers is a true example of the Ecotourism Equation”. Founded in 1990, 'Nomad Travellers Stores' have been kitting out travellers with clothing, equipment, books and maps, medical supplies and vaccinations for 10 years. Nomad is also very aware of its responsibility to local heritage and culture and is currently setting up a health clinic for locals on the Nepal and Sikhim Border.
