Title: Andean Trails expands its itinerary

Date: 19/11/2002

Following recent exploratory trips in Latin America, the Andean trails are delighted to offer an extended range of programmes for 2003.

As well as expanding the range of tours in Peru, Bolivia and Patagonia, we go into Ecuador for the first time, feature a new wilderness tour in southern Chile and include a mountaineering trip to climb Aconcagua.

The Andean Trails web site and new 2003 brochure carry full details. Below is a taster of what’s new …..

Aconcagua Ascent
Our Aconcagua mountaineering trip takes advantage of the fantastic mountain climbing opportunities near the Chilean capital, Santiago, as well as giving you the chance to reach the top of South America’s highest peak. This unique itinerary takes in Cerro Plomo (5400m), a non-technical snow peak, just outside and overlooking Santiago, before crossing the Andes into Argentina to tackle Aconcagua itself.

Weather permitting, Cerro Aconcagua (6959m) is within the scope of most fit and adventurous people with experience of trekking and camping in severe weather conditions. Normally the ascent presents few technical difficulties, but high altitudes and low temperatures demand that care be taken.

Although our scheduled group departures start and finish in Santiago, we also offer Mendoza, Argentina, as an alternative start/finish point.

Ecuador
Over the years, Andean Trails partners, Chris and Kathy, have travelled extensively in Ecuador, and due to increasing demand, are offering a whole new range of trips there in 2003. These include cruises in the Galapagos Islands (a wide choice, to suit all budgets), highland treks, volcano ascents (Imbabura, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo) and Amazon jungle trips.

Please contact us for details of all options.

Chile
The beautiful, sparsely-inhabited Aysen region is the centre-piece of a brand new Andean Trails adventure in southern Chile which also takes in the Lake District and Torres del Paine national park.

This vast wilderness area, often referred to as the Carretera Austral, is one of South America’s best-kept secrets. Our new trip takes us by sea from Puerto Montt to the port of Chaiten: our point of access to this remote tract of Patagonian wilderness. We travel south through the lush mountainous forests of the southern Araucaria and northern Aysen, a region characterised by snow-peaks, immense lakes and verdant forests.

This region’s most characteristic landmark is the San Raphael Glacier. We visit this spectacular glacier and its iceberg-filled lagoon before heading south to the Cerro Castillo national park for a beautiful four-day trek.

We then fly south to Punta Arenas and finish up in the awesome Torres del Paine national park.

Mexico ( ‘… but that’s not South America …’ )
True, but in a departure from South America, the Andean Trails team has been reacquainting itself with the Central America/Mexico region and is bringing out a new range of options for 2003.

Patagonia special offer
Devaluation of the Argentine peso has enabled us to cut by 25% the price of both our Patagonian Milodon and Patagonian Ice Cap trips, making Patagonia more affordable than ever this year. Keep in touch for news of our winter Patagonia programme, with an exploratory visit planned for July 2003.
