Percy's Country House Hotel and Restaurant, Devon

Stop Rating:

 Rooms: Less than 50

"Percy’s is a very rare place indeed."
GILES COREN, THE SATURDAY TIMES, APRIL 2002.
"It's not just the wonderful cooking, beautiful suroundings and tranquil air that make Percy's special, it's the fact that it's run by two dynamic people who put as much back into their environment as they take out."
NIKKI SMITH; WAITROSE FOOD ILLUSTRATED, APRIL 2002.
"Percy's dosen't take all this natural abundance for granted. The estate, which is undergoing organic conversion, produces game and lamb, as well as herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden. There are very few hotels that would greet your breakfast order of eggs with the words, 'duck, goose or hen?'."
DEE O’CONNELL; SUNDAY OBSERVER TRAVEL SECTION, MARCH 2002.
"In many ways Percy's is a model of its kind. Dedicated to using some of its own organic materials, so that the food reflects seasonal gluts and shortfalls, it maintains a degree of contact with the land that is as rare as it is welcome." JIM AINSWORTH; THE GOOD FOOD GUIDE 2002.

Pool House Hotel. Wester Ross, Scotland

Stop Rating:

 Rooms: Less than 50

Pool House Hotel can be found at the water's edge on the shore of Loch Ewe. Time is forgotten as guests watch the ever-changing view and as the tide retreats a whole spectrum of wild life can be seen. Seals are frequent visitors as are otters in the quieter months. The otters and their cubs provide excellent entertainment as they wrestle playfully over fish and tumble in the seaweed. Herons and cormorants stand still as statues whilst oystercatchers and curlews feed around them.

Some hotels excel at everything and this hotel is one of them. It has won a gold award for its environmental policies, awards for oustanding cuisine, quality and service, received the Johansens Award for 2000 as the "most excellent" establishment in the Traditional Inn/Hotel category for Great Britain &–Ireland and enjoys one of the most beautiful locations in Wester Ross.

Pool House Hotel has just been voted AA Hotel of the year for Scotland 2001. As proprietor, Liz Miles, says "you can be small and green and still win the awards!" Bookmark this hotel as one of your favourites.

Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Galway, Ireland

Stop Rating:

 Rooms: Less than 50

I arrived on a wonderfully balmy Spring evening at the luxurious Glenlo Abbey and was immediately won over by the view over the golf course towards Lough Corrib. The reception is warm and welcoming and you feel immediately at home. The rooms are spacious and elegant. Dining in the Pullman Restaurant (two of the original carriages from the Orient Express) is an interesting experience in itself, but the food is superb and even more of a reason to visit!

Originally the ruins of a downtrodden farm. both the hotel and the abbey were restored and developed by John Bourke and his family. Having worked in business for many years, John was new to the hotel trade, which is difficult to believe, because he is an hotelier par excellence and knows exactly how to put his visitors at ease. He is assisted by an efficient and friendly team for whom nothing is too much trouble.

You are unaware you are in an establishment which offers excellent conference and business facilities, because these are discreetly placed away from the traditional part of the hotel, but Glenlo Abbey can host a conference for as many as 250 people if necessary. Situated only minutes from Galway city centre and all those pubs and shops, this is an excellent place for that special stay, golfing weekend or business meeting.

The Glenmoriston Arms Hotel and Restaurant, Loch Ness, Scotland

After his visit to The Glenmoriston Arms Hotel, one happy visitor took the trouble to write the following not just to one tourist organisation but to several: “I have just returned from a series of superb culinary experiences in Scotland and I would like to recommend the Glenmoriston Arms Hotel for food (which was really excellent), for the accommodation and for the friendliness of the owners.”

Surrounded by the hills and glens, rivers and lochs that make this part of Scotland so uniquely beautiful and unforgettable, this small hotel (eight bedrooms) creates its own unique and welcoming ambiance of friendliness combined with meticulous detail and superb cooking (AA 2 Red rosettes). The Glenmoriston Arms takes a pride in using local produce. You must try the wild river salmon and do not forget to sample at least one or two of over 100 single malt whiskies available!

Longfield’s and its fine restaurant, Number Ten, can be found on Fitzwilliam Street Lower, within walking distance of Dublin’s main attractions, including Trinity College, Grafton Street and St Stephen's Green. It is an 18th century Georgian house and was originally the home of Lord Longfield.

Longfield's retains the charms of the elegant Georgian Terrace with its high-ceilinged rooms and tastefully designed interior. The hotel is elegant and comfortable, the ambiance warm and friendly, largely due to the efforts of Chris Vos, the General Manager, and his staff.

Bookmark the hotel as a place to stay when next in Dublin or book a table at Number Ten and enjoy the benefits of excellent cuisine combined with a splendid wine cellar! I arrived just when a champagne tasting was in progress. An excellent start!
