Biosphere success - (19/03/2003)

Biosphere Expeditions reports great demand this year for its conservation holidays. Says Matthias Hammer “It's great to be popular, but this year we definitely underestimated demand. By February we were already full on most expeditions. So we have added quite a few new slots, including PERU: Surveying monkeys, macaws and other wildlife of the Peru Amazon: Dates: 15 - 27 Jun | 29 Jun - 11 Jul 2003 | 13 - 25 Jul (new slot). However, if current demand is anything to go by, we will be completely full by springtime with little capacity of adding further slots, so if you are thinking of joining an expedition, please get in touch sooner, rather than later”.

A Land of Legends.... - (11/11/2001)

but where?

A Land of Legends - (11/11/2001)

Kyrgyzstan is said to be the Switzerland of the East and it certainly lives up to that image as 94 per cent is composed of beautiful snow-clad mountains, mysteriously known as the Celestial Mountains, complete with glaciers, mountain lakes and steppes.

This is the land of Alexander the Great, the Great Silk Route, charging hoards of Genghis Khan and many more legends and sagas. Independent from the Soviet Union since 1991, Kyrgyzstan is a multiethnic nation of nomads who have traditionally carved out a living in their mountainous land by living in felt yurts and tending sheep, goats and cows. They are a nation of horse-lovers with small babies learning to ride before they can even walk.

Here you can spend several wonderful days trekking in the mountains, riding their sturdy horses which scramble up the mountain paths like goats providing the opportunity to see the country in all its glory. The national game is Ulak Tartysh, a strange kind of polo with a headless goat!

The people of Kyrgyzstan are wonderfully warm and welcoming and long to have more tourists visit their beautiful country. Here adventure travel comes to life with opportunities for heli-skiing, white water rafting, trekking and riding amongst others. A different destination and one ready to welcome you!

New Hide for Victoria Falls Lodge - (11/11/2001)

To enable its guests to enjoy even closer contact with wildlife, the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has constructed a viewing Hide just five metres away from its natural waterhole.

New Hide for Victoria Falls Lodge - (11/11/2001)

To enable its guests to enjoy even closer contact with wildlife, the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has constructed a viewing Hide just five metres away from its natural waterhole.

Located only 100 metres in front of the Lodge, the waterhole is the focal point of the resort and enjoys regular visits from a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, herds of up to 200 buffalo, many kind of antelope, lions, hyenas, warthogs, banded mongoose and baboons. The waterhole also attracts numerous species of bird life.

Now guests can really get up close and personal with these animals during guided ‘sits’ at the aptly named Siduli Hide. (Siduli means anthill in Ndebele and the Hide has been built to resemble a natural anthill). Holding a maximum of five people, including the Guide, the Hide is south facing and downwind of the animals. The Lodge’s resident professional Guides are always on hand to escort guests to the Hide for two-hour sundowner sits.

A unique experience in Victoria Falls, guests have been treated to incredible sightings of game kills as well as unusual animal behaviour and activity.

The Siduli Hide is part of the Victoria Fall Safari Lodge’s ambitious product enhancement plan - which this year alone has seen the inclusion of a new Safari Spa and Nature Centre as well as substantial upgrades to its conference rooms and ongoing upgrades and refurbishment of guest rooms and public areas.

The Safari Lodge’s outstanding contribution to Zimbabwean tourism has been recognised with numerous awards and accolades. It has been voted Zimbabwe’s ‘Best Safari Lodge’ for six consecutive years by the Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents and won the Green Globe Distinction Award for Outstanding Environmental Performance, presented at I.T.B. 2000.

Still moving forward... - (10/11/2001)

The Caribbean is a region dedicated to the protection of the environment. The Cariibbean Hotel Association has the sustainable growth of tourism as one of its main priorities. However, the Caribbean has been hit drastically by the aftermath of September 11.

In a region four more times as dependent on Tourism than any other in the world, hotels are recording lower occupancies and some properties have even been forced to close. This has resulted in job losses, lay-offs and reduced hours and salary cuts as well as anegative impact on government revenues.

According to World Travel and Tourism Council statistics, travel and tourism account for 11.9 % of world GDP while the industry is the primary engine of economic growth in the Caribbean. Tourism generates around US $16 billion in foreign exchange in the Caribbean region and accounts for 3.6 million jobs or 35% of all employment in the wider Caribbean.

Even more commendable therefore are the efforts of the Bajan community and local companies and other companies to set up a new project, initiated by Coconut Court Beach Resort.

Coconut Court is
extremely active in the Marine protection area and the Directors of the
hotel were instrumental in setting up the Barbados Marine Trust.

There are thise who claim that hotels are only interested in environmental certification because they are thinking only of saving costs and increasing profits. This must be a major reason for many companies so it is good to see that some go beyond that and are genuinely committed to the good of the environmnent.
